About
The Department of Design of the Politecnico di Milano is the main Italian center for scientificresearch in the field of design. The Department is rooted in the Italian design culture and oriented to explore new disciplinary frontiers, putting design at the service of contemporarychallenges.
Established in 2002, the Department has given institutional form to a long path of design development at the Politecnico di Milano. Its students and professors have becomefundamental figures in the construction of design culture. Among them we can mentionAndrea Branzi, Achille Castiglioni, Enzo Mari, Vico Magistretti, Gio Ponti and Ettore Sottsass.
The Department aims to contribute to increasing scientific knowledge in the field of design in constant dialogue with other disciplines. The aim of the Department is to enrich its theoretical framework, tools and methodologies, redefining its perimeter and application contexts in relation to the technological, social and cultural transformations.
The Department, consisting of over 250 professors, researchers, PhD students and technical‐administrative staff, develops research and training and carries out technology transfer activities. It enhances the potential of design as a change agent towards new developmentparadigms oriented to innovation and environmental, social and cultural sustainability.
